Maths without frontiers

(March 2011/June 2011)

Target language:

Description:
Creation of several types of games using Maths vocabulary (11/13 years old)

Work's steps:
Activity 1 : Mixed words
Using Microsoft Word, pupils have to build:
- a 10x10 (or more if words are longer) table, filled in with words from Maths vocabulary
- a table for the list of words (ordered alphabetically)
- a text field for the definition pf the secret word or sentence (it can be whatever they like)
- text fields to inser cliparts around their grid, in order to personalize their work
- a text fiels to write their name, surname and class
Pupils will have to choose their words in the "Maths vocabulary in English" list (this list has been created in anothe projet called "Mathem'Alphabet Book"). They can also use integers written in letters.

Activity 2 : Cryptograms
In this activity, pupils will create cryptograms, using their knowledge about rules of priority in calculations. We will use Microsoft Word.
Pupils will make hidden messages for their partners to discover.
An integer (between 1 and 26) corresponds to a letter of the alphabet.
Pupils have to choose their own "code", deciding which number corresponds to which letter.

A first table will show this correspondance at the beginning of the work (2 lines - 26 colums)
Each letter of the alphabet corresponds to an integer, and each integer is the result of mathematical  operations.
You can only use the 4 operations +,-,x,: (no power, no square root).
About negative numbers : only additions and subtractions
About frractions : : addition and subtraction of fractions with multiple denominators; multiplications; but no divisions or negative numbers
examples:
[3+(25+8):11]x(5-2)=18
18 corresponds to a letter of the alphabet
(-1)-(-6)=5
5 corresponds to another letter of the alphabet

Then pupils will create a second table :
- first line : calculations they created
- second line : results of the calculations
- third line : for the letters corresponding to results
Then, in order to personalize their work, pupils will insert cliparts onto their page, inside text fields to place them where thay want. And finally, they will make a text fiels to write their name.

Activity 3 : Labyrinths of words
Using Microsoft Word software, pupils have to build tables, to use text fields in order to illustrate their grid.
First table : number of lines and columns dependind on the number of letters in the logest word (pupils will have to learn how to make transparent borders)
Second table : for the definitions of mathematical words, written in English

Activity 4 : Holiday Games
Teachers create a book grouping all pupils games, called "Holiday Games".

Expected results:
- to have fun with Maths and English
- Improvement in the communication between the pupils in French, English and Maths
- to do Maths differently (enhancing the play aspect of the work)
- to show pupils how universal the mathematical language is
- to encourage debates between pupils about mathematical problems
- to encourage pupil's creativity
- to use a word processor in the ICT classroom
